Tanya Tagaq
Biography
Experimental vocalist and artist Tanya Tagaq won the Polaris Prize for best Canadian album in 2014, for Animism which furthered her already extensive international success, playing to major festivals and packed houses all over the world. Tagaq has since followed up 'Animism' with her new album 'Retribution', which has been nominated for Polaris Prize (2017) -an even more musically aggressive, more aggressively political, more challenging, more spine tingling, more powerful masterpiece.
In 2016, Tanya was awarded the Order of Canada for her “contributions to Canadian culture through her avant-garde Inuit throat singing.”
'Retribution' is a cohesive, whole statement. Why sugarcoat it? This album is about rape. Rape of women, rape of the land, rape of children, despoiling of traditional lands without consent. Hence the cover version of Nirvana’s song “Rape Me.” It’s at least a hundred times more chilling than the original.
“… [Tagaq] made it (Inuit throat singing) sound fiercely contemporary, futuristic even. Recalling animal noises and various other nature sounds, she was a dynamo, delivering a sort of gothic sound art while she stalked the small basement stage with feral energy.” —Jon Caramanica, The New York Times
“Tagaq projects sounds that carry the imprint of the body’s secret contours and recesses, delving far beyond personal utterance, out beyond human identity, to summon voices from the flesh cavity haunts of animal spirits and primal energies.” —The Wire, UK
